HTS code lookup cheat sheet
A repeatable workflow for classifying products faster, checking duty rates, and spotting AD/CVD risk before it hits the desk.
1. Start with function, not description
HTS classification follows the Harmonized System rules of interpretation. Lead with what the item does, then refine with material, size, and end use.
2. Look up by product, not by supplier wording
Supplier product names are marketing language. Lookup tools work best with plain product descriptions and intended use.
3. Check duty + AD/CVD on one pass
Do not treat HTS lookup and duty calc as separate tasks. You want the chapter, heading, subheading, applicable duty rate, and any special duty or AD/CVD in one view.
4. Validate with your broker before first entry
Self-service lookup is fast, but first-time classifications should get broker confirmation. Use your lookup as a draft, not a final ruling.
